How to Order Custom Cosmetic Packaging from China
A practical process for sourcing packaging from China: what to ask for, what to inspect, how to pay, and the five mistakes that cause most delays.

Sourcing packaging from China is a documented process, not a risk category. Buyers who control the specification get consistent results; buyers who approve from photos get rework.
1. Qualify before you sample
Ask for five items:
- Drawing or specification sheet for the part, with dimensions and tolerances
- Neck or engine interface confirmation
- Colour standard with tolerance (ΔE) and a retained approved sample
- Material declaration for the resin grade, plus recycled-content certificate if claimed
- Inspection report format and AQL criteria
A supplier who cannot provide these is not ready to hold your specification.
2. Sample in the production specification
| Sample type | Purpose | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Stock sample | Format, capacity, closure fit | 5–10 working days |
| Custom colour sample | Colour approval in production resin | 10–15 working days |
| Decorated sample | Photography, retail, stability testing | 10–20 working days |
| Filled sample | Compatibility soak test (4–12 weeks) | Ships with the decorated sample |
Approve on physical samples. Photographs compress colour and hide surface texture.
3. Freeze the specification in writing
Before production: the drawing revision, colour standard, decoration placement, closure torque spec, packing configuration and carton labelling. Everything that follows is checked against this document.
4. Inspect before shipping
Request:
- Dimension and weight record for the lot
- Leak and dose test results where applicable
- Colour record against the approved sample
- Photos of finished goods and cartons before dispatch
- Third-party inspection access if you use an agency (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek)
5. Payment and freight
| Item | Standard practice |
|---|---|
| Samples | Prepaid, courier cost at buyer's account |
| Trial orders | 100% prepayment |
| Production orders | 30% deposit, balance against bill of lading copy |
| Terms | FOB, CIF, DDP or air freight, stated in the quotation |
| Documents | Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin as required |
6. Five mistakes that cause most delays
- Approving colour from a photo — always a physical sample
- Choosing the closure after the bottle is tooled — the neck finish is engineering
- Assuming MOQ is per order — it is per design and per colour
- Skipping the formula compatibility test — stress cracking appears after shipping
- Ignoring carton dimensions — freight surprises arrive at booking time
Realistic timeline
| Stage | Duration |
|---|---|
| Qualification and quotation | 1 week |
| Sampling | 2–3 weeks |
| Sample approval and specification lock | 1 week |
| Production | 3–5 weeks |
| Sea freight | 18–35 days |
| Air freight | 5–10 days |
Total: 10–14 weeks by sea, 8–11 weeks by air. Plan from those figures, not from a best case. See cosmetic packaging manufacturer China for the supplier-side view.
Quick answers
The questions this guide receives most often, answered in one or two lines.
Is it safe to order custom packaging from China?
It is safe when you control the specification and inspect against it: written drawing, physical colour approval, documented AQL inspection and payment terms linked to shipping documents.
How do I avoid quality problems?
Approve from physical samples in the production resin and finish, lock the specification in writing, request lot inspection records, and run a compatibility soak test before mass production.
What payment terms should I expect?
Samples are prepaid; production orders typically run 30% deposit with the balance against the bill of lading copy. Terms should be stated in the quotation rather than negotiated per order.
