MOQ in cosmetic packaging is set by set-up cost, not by willingness: stock moulds start around 1,000 pcs, decorated orders at about 3,000 pcs, and custom moulds at roughly 10,000 pcs per size.

Every MOQ traces back to a fixed cost that has to be absorbed: a screen or a die, a colourant batch, a fixture, a tooling set or a printer set-up. Understanding which fixed cost applies to your order explains the quantity you are quoted.
This guide gives realistic MOQ bands by route, then shows how brands reduce a first order without losing the packaging quality they need.

These bands are what we quote in practice. Individual projects move up or down depending on colour count, decoration and part complexity.

How to lower a first-order MOQ
Eight practical levers, in the order we usually recommend them.
- Choose a stock mould instead of an adapted or new one
- Reduce colour count: one injection colour plus a label is often enough for launch
- Start with digital printing, which has no screen set-up
- Standardise across SKUs: one bottle, one cap, one decoration method for the whole line
- Share an MOQ across formats by ordering a mixed range in one shipment
- Use a label for complex artwork and reserve printing for the brand mark
- Postpone coating and metallic finishing to a later production run
- Stage the range: launch with the two best-selling SKUs and add the rest in the repeat order
What MOQ does not apply to
Sampling quantities are separate from production MOQ. Stock samples are supplied in small numbers (typically up to five pieces per SKU), and custom decorated samples are quoted per design regardless of the production quantity that follows.

Why is there an MOQ for cosmetic packaging?
Because fixed set-up costs must be absorbed: colourant batches, screens, dies, fixtures, print cylinders and tooling. Below a certain quantity those costs dominate unit price, which is why a 500-piece order costs more per unit than a 5,000-piece order.
What is the lowest realistic MOQ for a skincare brand?
Around 1,000 pcs per SKU on a stock mould with stock colour and no decoration, or about 3,000 pcs once you add custom colour and printing. Multi-SKU orders can share one MOQ plan.
Does MOQ apply per colour or per order?
Per design and per colour. If you order one bottle in three colours, the MOQ applies to each colour because the moulding run and colourant batch change between them.
Can I pay more per unit to reduce the MOQ?
Sometimes, within limits. Below a certain quantity the set-up cost becomes uneconomic for both sides, and we will say so rather than quote a price you would not accept. The alternative is to move decoration to a label or reduce colour count.
Does the MOQ change for repeat orders?
Repeat orders on an approved specification are usually more flexible, because screens, dies, colour standards and drawings are already on file. Quantities from 1,000 pcs are often possible on repeats.
