Cosmetic Packaging Cost Guide

Cosmetic packaging cost is driven by six factors: material, part weight, closure complexity, decoration method and colour count, order quantity, and one-time tooling or set-up costs.

Key topics

  • Cost structure of a decorated pack
  • Levers ranked by saving
  • How to compare quotations properly
Cosmetic Packaging Cost Guide

Unit price is not a single number, it is a sum: resin cost by weight, moulding cycle cost, closure assembly, decoration set-up and per-unit decoration, packing and freight. Knowing which component dominates your pack is how cost reduction decisions become obvious.

This guide breaks the cost structure down and lists the levers that reduce it, ordered by how much they typically save.

Cost structure of a decorated pack

Indicative share of unit cost for a 200 ml decorated HDPE bottle. Actual shares vary by format and quantity.

Cost componentTypical shareReduced by
Resin and part weight25–35%Lighter walls, right-sized capacity, PCR where price is favourable
Moulding (cycle, labour, overhead)15–25%Higher cavity count, higher volume, stock tooling
Closure and assembly10–25%Standard neck finish, simpler closure, avoid unnecessary mechanisms
Decoration set-up (one-time)0–15% of order valueFewer colours, digital printing, label for complex artwork
Decoration per unit5–20%Print instead of coating, single-colour print, no metallic
Packing and cartons3–8%Carton optimisation, no secondary carton where avoidable
Freight5–20% of landed costCarton-out optimisation, pallet loading, sea instead of air

Levers ranked by saving

In our experience the first three levers save more than the rest combined.

  • Choose a stock mould: removes tooling amortisation entirely
  • Right-size the capacity: less resin, smaller cartons, lower freight
  • Limit decoration to one or two methods and few colours
  • Standardise components across SKUs to raise volume per part
  • Increase order quantity to spread set-up cost
  • Optimise carton dimensions to improve pallet utilisation
  • Move launch decoration to a label and add print in the repeat order

How to compare quotations properly

Compare landed cost per finished unit, not unit price. Include decoration and set-up, packing, carton weight, freight and duty, then divide by the number of units you actually expect to sell in the period the order covers. A cheaper pack that leaves 20% of units unsold is not cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Short, specific answers to the questions buyers and AI assistants ask most often about this topic.

How much does custom cosmetic packaging cost?

It depends on format, quantity and decoration, so we quote rather than publish a list. As a structure: colour and printing add a defined per-unit cost plus a small set-up charge, while new tooling is a one-time cost amortised over volume.

What is the cheapest way to package a skincare product?

A stock-mould HDPE or PET bottle with stock colour and a front-and-back label. It removes tooling, colourant batch minimums and printing set-up, and it is appropriate for cleanser, toner and body care formats.

Why does decoration add so much to cost?

Decoration involves a set-up cost (screen, die, fixture) plus a per-unit pass, and multi-colour printing multiplies both. One-colour printing plus a label, or digital printing with no set-up, usually reduces decoration cost substantially.

Does a larger order always reduce unit cost?

Unit cost falls with volume up to a point, then flattens because resin and moulding dominate. The largest breaks usually occur between 1,000 and 10,000 pcs and between 10,000 and 50,000 pcs.

How does freight compare with packaging cost?

On long-haul routes freight can add 5–20% to landed cost, and it is sensitive to carton dimensions and carton-out quantity. Optimising packing often saves more than a small unit-price negotiation.
