There are four levels of customisation, and most brands need fewer than they think. Custom colour and decoration is level one, a custom configuration of stock parts is level two, a modified mould is level three, and a fully new mould is level four.

Each level builds on the one before, and the sequence is deliberate: it protects budget and launch timing.

- Capacity and fill weight, plus formula density or viscosity
- Material preference or compatibility constraints
- Closure or dispensing type (cap, pump, dropper, sprayer, airless)
- Colour reference: Pantone and/or a physical sample
- Decoration: printing colours, hot stamping, coating, labelling
- Target quantity for launch, and expected annual volume
- Market and any regulatory documentation required

What customisation should not change
Thread geometry, sealing surfaces and pump or engine interfaces should be treated as fixed engineering rather than design variables. Changing them for appearance reasons is the most common cause of leaks, capping failures and rework — and it is avoidable when the interface is agreed in the drawing.
