Recyclable Packaging

Recyclability is a property of the pack plus the system that handles it. Technically recyclable means the material can be reprocessed; actually recycled depends on collection, sorting and end markets in your customers' markets.

Design changes improve the odds: single-polymer packs, closures in the same polymer, light colours that optical sorters recognise, and labels that either match the pack polymer or are small enough not to interfere.

How to word the claim

State the specific structure and where it can be recycled: 'PP bottle with PP closure; recyclable where PP collection exists.' Avoid blanket statements such as '100% recyclable packaging' because collection infrastructure varies by market and by municipality, and the claim cannot be supported everywhere it is printed.

  • Name the polymer and confirm the pack is mono-material
  • Say where the stream exists rather than implying universal collection
  • Keep ingredient and recycling instructions legible on the pack
  • Verify the design against your priority market's guidance (for example EU PPWR-aligned design criteria)

What makes cosmetic packaging recyclable?

A pack that can be sorted and reprocessed: typically a single-polymer construction with a matching closure, light or natural colour, and a label that does not interfere with sorting. Technically recyclable design does not guarantee it is recycled, because that depends on collection infrastructure.

Can airless packaging be recyclable?

Airless packs are multi-part assemblies of PP, PE and elastomers, which makes sorting harder. Mono-material PP airless bodies with PP engines are the most recyclable option, and refillable designs that reuse the outer body reduce material per use.

Do black packs get recycled?

Carbon-black pigmented plastics are difficult for near-infrared optical sorters to detect, so they frequently end up rejected. Where recyclability matters, choose natural, light or mid-tone colours, or a detectable alternative pigment.

Are labels a problem for recycling?

A full-body opaque sleeve can cause a pack to be misidentified or rejected. Small front-and-back labels, or films matched to the pack polymer, are much less disruptive — which is why we recommend them for ranges with recyclability claims.
