Cosmetic Packaging Decoration Guide
Decoration turns a stock mould into a brand's pack. This guide compares the methods by durability, capability, quantity and cost.

Decoration is where most of the perceived value of a pack is created — and where most of the cost flexibility sits. Choosing method and colour count deliberately usually saves more than negotiating unit price.
Methods compared
| Method | Capability | Minimum | Durability | Cost driver |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen printing | 4–6 solid colours, opaque white on dark parts | 3,000 pcs | High | Screens + passes per colour |
| UV digital printing | Photographic, gradients, variable data | 1,000 pcs | Good | Print time per part |
| Hot stamping | Metallic logos and accents | 3,000 pcs | High | Die + foil consumption |
| Spray coating | Full-surface colour, gloss/matte/metallic | 3,000–5,000 pcs | High | Fixture + material + masking |
| Frosted (moulded) | Fine matte texture | Tooling only | Permanent | Mould texture work |
| Soft-touch coating | Velvet tactile finish | 3,000 pcs | Good | Fixture + primer + top coat |
| Labelling | Unlimited artwork, variable info | 1,000 pcs | Depends on adhesive | Label + application |
Choosing by artwork
- A logo and a short line of text → screen print or hot stamp
- Gradient or photographic imagery → UV digital print
- Full ingredient and regulatory panels → front-and-back label
- Premium accent on a matte body → hot stamp foil on a moulded or sprayed matte surface
- Multi-variant launch (shades, scents) → UV digital print
Durability testing
Print and coating failures appear weeks into use, in bathrooms, with wet and oily hands. Test before the run:
- Cross-hatch tape test for adhesion
- Isopropanol and ethanol rub
- Nail-polish remover rub for bathroom products
- Abrasion test for packs carried in bags
- Registration and colour comparison against the approved sample
Design rules that prevent rework
- Do not place print or foil across a parting line or weld mark
- Approve colours on the final surface finish, not on a gloss plaque
- Keep minimum text size around 1.2 mm cap height for screen print
- Define print areas with a dieline per format and confirm bleed
- Where recyclability is claimed, keep decoration light and separable
Cost behaviour
Set-up charges are per design and per colour; per-unit costs are per pass. Moving from four printed colours to one printed colour plus a label typically reduces both. See the cost guide for the full lever list.

Quick answers
The questions this guide receives most often, answered in one or two lines.
Which decoration method is most durable?
Moulded embossing is permanent but low contrast. Of the applied methods, screen printing and hot stamping are the most durable when ink, primer and curing are correct.
Can I decorate without set-up costs?
UV digital printing has no screen or die cost, so it is the lowest set-up option and works from about 1,000 pcs per variant.
Does decoration affect recyclability?
Yes. Full-body sleeves, metallised coatings and heavy inks reduce sortability. Direct printing in light or natural colours, with a small label for information, keeps the pack's sorting behaviour intact.
